Chile Earthquake
On September 16, 2015, a shocking 8.3 earthquake struck Chile Wednesday night; the biggest to hit the country since 2010, with a tsunami later following. After the earthquake struck, the government immediately ordered evacuations along coastal regions, hoping to avoid what happened in 2010; when authorities didn’t warn citizens of an oncoming tsunami, it killed hundreds of citizens after an 8.8 earthquake in Chile in 2010. The earthquake in 2015 was so powerful that it was even felt as far away as Buenos Aires in Argentina. 10 aftershocks continued to hit Chile on Thursday.
The aftermath was devastating. Over a million people had to evacuate. The areas that were hit the hardest were coastal regions and experienced massive floods, damaged buildings and power blackouts. At least 10 people have died by falling objects or other reasons. Luckily, this time the residents were better prepared for the earthquake and had followed evacuation routines. They were safely out of harm’s way when the tsunami hit. Also, the government was much more cautious this time and issued tsunami warnings as a safety precaution immediately after the quake struck instead of waiting, saving tons of lives.
I chose this article because, even though it really upset me to hear about the devastation and struggle the people of Chile have suffered due to the earthquake, I think it’s important to stay up to date with current world news. If you are, then you’ll know what’s happening and be aware of all the issues around the world so you can make a difference. I also think it’s remarkable how powerful the earthquake was. People as far away as New Zealand were warned of “unusually strong currents” by authorities; and tsunami warnings were issued in South America, Hawaii, and even California. It’s just astonishing how powerful the quake was, and how extreme the results were.
